Chapter 1 - Not so Eleanor's day

The rain fell in sideways sheets, cold and relentless, the wind whipping it in every direction, making an umbrella slicker and nearly useless. The weather made Bali looked so gloomy on that day. Eleanor Palmer was a British woman who moved to Bali when she was fifteen because of her mother’s Hotel business. Eight years later, she got her own business by running a cafe. She had quite a good career and not to forget, a super dead gorgeous boyfriend named Caleb Moore who was the owner of Blue Point Bay Villas. She was really happy with her life and thought that Caleb would be her happily ever after.

Eleanor was standing in front of her door’s house and getting ready to run towards her car which was parked outside. She managed her pace and got into the car. Then she looked into a small mirror and made sure her make-up was not ruined by raindrop. She started the engine and headed to her cafe in Seminyak, called “ Garden Bistro and Patisserie”. Suddenly, her cell phone rang and the name “ Bae” was on the screen. She tapped the screen quickly and said hello.

“Hi, beb. I’m heading to the cafe and it’s raining now. I really hate it. I wish you could come over this afternoon and we are having lunch together.”

“I’m so sorry darling, I wish I could but the schedule’s a bit tight here and I need to see some developers to discuss a new project. Instead, I have to go to the airport right now to pick up my sister.”

“Your sister? I thought she was still in Paris. All right then, take care love and send my regard to your sister.”

“You too. I’ll call you later as soon as possible. I love you.”

“I love you too. Bye.”

Eleanor sighed and felt a bit curious about Caleb and all she could think was, it’s just a rainy, gloomy day and everything is fine, nothing to worry about. Just chill Len, chill... Then she arrived and parked her car. She got off the car and there, by the porch of the cafe, her mother had already stood and waited for her. Mrs.Palmer looked so stunning with her Dolce and Gabana flowery dress, matched with her Manolo Blahnik heels, but her face showed weariness. Eleanor, soon, greeted and hugged her mother. She walked to her mother and then they both came inside the cafe, walked straight to the back and sat down on a bench under a big canopy. Five minutes later, a waitress came along and served a cup of coffee and a cup of tea.

“Mom, how are you? You looked so tired, and why didn’t you call me or tell me first that you would come here? I could have just picked you up along the way. Is everything okay with your business trip?”

“Oh sweetheart, I simply don’t want to bother you. Besides, I could drive by myself and wanted to surprise you. Well, my business trip went quite good. The investors agreed with my decision and soon, The Palmer Hotel will be built in Menjangan Island. So, how are you with Caleb? When are you going to break up with him?”

Mrs.Palmer’s sarcastic tone made Eleanor stopped stirring her tea. Then she looked at her mother desperately and said, “Oh mom, not again. Can we just not talking about that? I’m tired of you asking me that question almost every time we meet. I love Caleb and I know he does too. So, why don’t you just take the reality for once? He’s nothing like father.”

“Don’t you dare to say that Leni! I know your father made mistakes but he is still you father and you have to forgive him. Here is my point, you are still young and I don’t want you to make any mistakes that would make your future worse. I’ve already told you that Caleb is married and he has a wife, one of my colleague saw him with a woman in Singapore, they were holding hands and kissing, and they both wore wedding rings. Even if that woman wasn’t his wife then it meant he was cheating on you just a while ago.”

“No, mom. It must be a mistake. Maybe your colleague saw a wrong person or maybe he saw someone that looked like Caleb. I trust Caleb and if you don’t like him, oh please mom, just don’t spread lies or bad things about him. He’s already proposed me and I said yes. I wish you could be happy for me. Now, if you please mom, I have a cafe to run.”

The coffee went cold and even Mrs.Palmer had not touched it yet. She was still in shock about her daughter proposal and not a word came out from her mouth. It was so silent for a minute. Then Eleanor stood and walked into the main dining room, straight to the bar’s table. Mrs.Palmer followed and looked at her daughter sadly and said, “Leni, you are my only child, you are such a proud for me and I wish I could be happy for you about your proposal but I can’t. I just want the best for you, especially for your future and I don’t want you to make the same mistake I did by not listening to what my mother told me about your father. I know deep inside your heart you almost feel the same way like I did, like something is off about Caleb. Please, think it through.” After saying those words, Mrs.Palmer walked away and left Eleanor in silence.

International Cultural Festival and Celebration was an event held by Widya Mandala University on April, 8 2016. There were several representatives from 7 different countries such as France, Belarus, China, Indonesia, Spain, Netherlands and German. They told us about their beloved countries like their history, favorite spots for tourist and also their language. This event was also opened for public, so there were many high school students came.

When I came into the auditorium, it had already crowded with people. I saw 7 tenants from 7 different countries. However, I was really interested in Indonesia’s tenant which called “Warung Pecel Enak Pol”. It served Indonesian’s traditional food called pecel. Then, I sat down and the event began. The event was started with a dance performance. After that, the representatives began their presentation one by one.

The first turn fell to China. They sent 1 representative to do the presentation. She told us about Hakka community in Indonesia, how it grew, and where they came from. Besides that, she also taught us how to write in china’s calligraphy. Then, after she finished the presentation, 1 representative from France came on to the stage and took over. She greeted us with French and the audience was so confuse because almost all of us did not know what that meant. However, she then translated it in to Bahasa Indonesia. She told us that in order to learn French, there were several levels that we had to overcome. I knew France was so difficult to learn, especially when it came to pronounce the words. After that, the next turn was Belarus. The representative also told us the same way like the other 2 countries.

The fourth turn fell to Indonesia. The representative talked about Indonesian’s traditional food such as pecel and rujak cingur. It was so interesting and almost made me wanted to eat one. After that, the next turn was Spain and then followed by German and Netherlands. Spain’s salsa dance was a quite good activity to distract our boredom. However, German’s representative was a funny person. She liked to joke a bit and then threw some questions about their country and for they who could answer her questions got 1 goody bag. It attracted everyone in the auditorium and we were excited to answer. The last but not least was Netherlands. They sent 2 representatives to the stage and explained all about the greatness of Netherlands.

As for me, I would rather say this event is quite good but not perfect. I knew this event was very helpful because it shared a lot of information from 7 different countries and they also offered us to apply study abroad. Nevertheless, it would be better if every country have 1 native speaker as a representative and shortened the duration of presentation because too much presentation made us bored. After all, I think this event can be held again next year with a better concept.

As for me, I create zodiac signs based on Nordic mythology with its god and goddess, then

combined their characteristics to the people’s behavior in daily life. According to Nordic’s myth, universe is organized into Nine Worlds interconnected and bound together by an immense ash tree called Yggdrasil (the World Tree). The Nine Worlds appear to be situated on three levels: an upper level includes Asgard, Vanaheim, and Alfheim; a middle level comprises Midgard, Jotunheim and Muspellheim; and a lower level includes Svartalfheim, Niflheim and presumably Hel. The upper and middle levels are connected by Bifrost, the fiery rainbow bridge reaching from Asgard to Midgard.

Like the Greeks and the Romans before them, Nordics believe that there are three gods that are more important than the others. They are Odin as The god of the warriors and battle, but also the god of wisdom and poetry, Thor as The god of thunder and Freya as The goddess of fertility, marriage and growing things. Many of the goddess symbols come from the legends surrounding a specific goddess and were "characters" in her story. Other goddess symbols were derived from the rituals used in the ancient rites of worship of these pagan goddesses. In this zodiac sign, I will be focusing on Freya.

Freya is often represented by symbols associated with her passionate support of those she favored. It is not surprising that many of our icons representing vigorous and spectacular passion are derived from the ancient goddess symbols of Freya. She is considered to be the goddess of Love and Beauty, but is also a warrior goddess and one of great wisdom and magic. Many of the tribes venerated her higher than the Aesir, calling her "the Frowe" or "The Lady." She is known as Queen of the Valkyries, choosers of those slain in battle to bear them to Valhalla (the Norse heaven). She wears the sacred golden necklace Brisingamen that alluding to some solar associations , and she appears driving a chariot which is pulled by cats.

People who are born on January 20 – February 18 under the sign of Freya would be ardent and dynamic lovers. They are very passionate and courageous. They may be particularly secretive, but they are nonetheless conciliatory and enjoy cooperating with others. Friendship occupies an important place in their lives and they reveal themselves to be open, friendly and pleasant ladies who are always happy to help, to lend a hand or a sympathetic ear. Likewise, when it comes to love, they are sentimental creatures who are loving and attentive to their partner´s needs. Their personal life with probably take precedent over their career; however if they decide to work, they are likely to be attracted to occupations in connection with the notion of service (such as secretary and salesperson), advice or children ( such as primary school teacher and nurse) , occupations connected with the latest technology ( such as fashion, marketing, advertising and information technology) , or those that are highly specialized, activities in relation to travel or sales, or any occupation that involves mobility or change. Their favorite colors are red as a symbol of physical love, black as a symbol of protection, and gold as a symbol of prosperity. Friday is their day, then 5 and 13 are their lucky numbers.
